Walt Disney World: My Family’s Tips, Favorite Experiences & Recommendations for an Unforgettable Disney Vacation
There’s a reason Walt Disney World continues to be one of the most beloved vacation destinations in the world. It’s not just the attractions, the characters, or even the iconic Cinderella Castle. It’s the way Disney creates moments—those little memories that seem to stick with you long after the vacation ends.
As a travel advisor, I spend a lot of time helping clients plan Disney vacations, but there’s something special about experiencing the magic firsthand with your own family. Recently, we spent several days exploring Walt Disney World, and while we had a list of must-do attractions and dining reservations, some of our favorite moments ended up being the ones we never could have planned for: watching a parade unexpectedly roll by, discovering a new favorite dessert, or simply relaxing on a boat ride back to our resort after a long day.
If you’re considering planning a Disney vacation, I want to share some of our favorite experiences, dining recommendations, and planning tips—not just what we loved, but why I think they're worth your time.
Finding Our Disney Home at Port Orleans Riverside
For this trip, we stayed at Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort, and honestly, it ended up being one of the highlights of our vacation.
While Disney is known for its exciting parks and nonstop entertainment, I’ve always believed that where you stay plays a huge role in your overall experience. After all, Disney days are long. Between rope drop, Lightning Lanes, dining reservations, parades, and fireworks, having a comfortable place to return to each evening makes a huge difference.
Port Orleans Riverside offered exactly that.
Inspired by the charm of the Louisiana bayou, the resort blends Southern elegance with touches of Disney magic, including subtle nods to The Princess and the Frog. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with walking paths, riverside views, and quiet corners that make you forget you're at one of the busiest vacation destinations in the world.
One of my favorite memories wasn't in a park at all—it was taking the complimentary boat from the resort to Disney Springs. After a busy day, there was something incredibly relaxing about cruising along the water, watching the scenery pass by, and slowing down for a bit before dinner.
Of course, the complimentary Disney transportation is another major reason I recommend staying on property whenever possible. Between the buses to all four theme parks and the boat service to Disney Springs, we never had to worry about parking, navigating traffic, or coordinating transportation.
As a travel advisor, this is one of the biggest reasons I often encourage clients to consider a Disney resort. The convenience alone can make the vacation feel far more relaxing.
During our stay, we also enjoyed dinner at Boatwright’s Dining Hall, the resort’s table-service restaurant. It offered hearty Southern-inspired dishes in a warm, welcoming atmosphere and was a nice change of pace from the busier dining experiences in the parks.
Why Planning Ahead Makes Disney So Much More Enjoyable
Before I dive into the parks, I want to share one piece of advice that can completely change your Disney experience:
Plan ahead.
Disney is magical, but it’s also incredibly popular. The families who get the most out of their vacation are usually the ones who do a little preparation beforehand.
One of the biggest game-changers for us was purchasing Lightning Lane access in advance. Some of Disney’s most popular attractions can have wait times well over an hour, especially during peak travel seasons. Being able to bypass those lines and spend more time enjoying the parks made a huge difference.
Another recommendation I frequently make is using a MagicBand.
Throughout our trip, our MagicBands became our room keys, dining plan access, park tickets, Lightning Lane passes, and even interacted with show entertainment. It sounds like a small thing, but not having to constantly pull out your phone or search for tickets made everything feel seamless.
And if you're considering the Disney Dining Plan, I highly recommend taking a close look.
One thing I love about the dining plan is that it allows families to focus less on spending and more on enjoying the experience. Meals and snacks feel like part of the vacation rather than constant budget decisions.
We especially enjoyed using snack credits for treats (and much needed coffee!) throughout the parks. One of my absolute favorites was the Mango Dole Whip at EPCOT's Refreshment Outpost. It was refreshing, tropical, and exactly what we needed on a warm Florida afternoon.
Magic Kingdom: The Disney Magic We All Imagine
No matter how many Disney photos you've seen, nothing quite compares to walking down Main Street U.S.A. and seeing Cinderella Castle in person.
There’s a reason Magic Kingdom remains the most iconic Disney park. It captures the feeling that many people imagine when they think of Disney.
What surprised me most during this visit was how much I appreciated some of the classic attractions.
Of course, there are plenty of newer rides throughout Walt Disney World, but some of our favorite moments came from timeless Disney experiences with our toddler daughter like Dumbo, The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, It's a Small World, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
One attraction I recommend to nearly every client is the Tomorrowland PeopleMover.
It’s not thrilling. It doesn’t have cutting-edge technology. But that's exactly why it's wonderful.
The PeopleMover gives you a chance to sit down, cool off, enjoy great views of Tomorrowland, and simply slow down for a few minutes. In a vacation filled with constant excitement, those moments of rest become surprisingly valuable.
For lunch, we stopped at Pinocchio Village Haus, which I often recommend for one simple reason: comfort.
Not only is it air-conditioned, but some seating areas overlook It's a Small World, giving families something entertaining to watch while enjoying a meal.
Later that evening, we had dinner at Jungle Skipper Canteen, which ended up being one of the culinary surprises of our trip.
The restaurant extends the storytelling of the nearby Jungle Cruise attraction and offers a fun, adventurous atmosphere. My favorite discovery was the Exotic Mango and Ginger Green Tea. If you visit, ask for honey and lemon—this tea comes served in a charming teapot and was one of the most soothing drinks I enjoyed all week.
Of course, no Magic Kingdom day is complete without the nighttime fireworks.
As beautiful as they are, I think what makes Disney fireworks special isn't the pyrotechnics. It's the emotion. The music, projections, storytelling, and shared experience create a moment that feels bigger than just a show.
Hollywood Studios: Where Movies Come to Life
Hollywood Studios was one of the most exciting parks for our family because it offers such a unique blend of nostalgia and adventure.
Walking into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge feels like stepping into another world. Even if you're not a die-hard Star Wars fan, the level of detail is incredible.
Rise of the Resistance remains one of the most impressive attractions Disney has ever created. It's part ride, part show, and part immersive experience.
We also spent time in Toy Story Land, which continues to be one of my favorite themed areas in Walt Disney World. Disney does an amazing job of making guests feel like they've shrunk down to toy size.
Slinky Dog Dash was a family favorite and one of those attractions that appeals to both kids and adults.
For lunch, we enjoyed ABC Commissary. While it may not be one of Disney's most talked-about restaurants, it provided exactly what we needed: good food, air conditioning, and a chance to recharge.
One hidden gem I always recommend is Mickey and Minnie Starring in Red Carpet Dreams. Character meet-and-greets can sometimes have long waits, but this location often offers a more relaxed experience and fantastic photo opportunities.
Don’t miss out on some great shows!
Whether you're a longtime Frozen fan or simply looking for a fun break from the Florida heat, this entertaining stage show is a must-see. Join Anna, Elsa, and friends as the story of Arendelle comes to life through humor, storytelling, and beloved songs like Let It Go that will have the entire audience singing along. Plus, get ready to experience some real snow!
Dive under the sea with Ariel in this beautifully reimagined theatrical production featuring stunning visuals, special effects, and favorite songs from the classic film. It's a wonderful blend of nostalgia, Disney storytelling, and Broadway-style entertainment for guests of all ages.
No Hollywood Studios day is complete without Fantasmic!, Disney's spectacular nighttime show starring Mickey Mouse. Combining fireworks, fountains, music, special effects, live performers, and beloved Disney characters, this breathtaking production is the perfect grand finale to an unforgettable day in the park.
Dinner at Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant was another highlight.
Dining under a starry sky while seated in a vintage 1950s convertible feels uniquely Disney. It’s not just a meal—it’s an experience.
Animal Kingdom: Disney's Most Beautiful Park
If someone asked me which Disney park surprised me the most, I'd probably say Animal Kingdom.
Many first-time visitors assume it's simply a zoo, but it’s so much more than that.
The park is beautifully designed, incredibly immersive, and encourages guests to slow down and explore.
Pandora – The World of Avatar remains one of the most visually stunning areas Disney has ever built.
Flight of Passage continues to be one of my favorite attractions because of the way it combines technology with emotion. It genuinely feels like you're soaring through Pandora.
When we needed a break from the heat, Pizzafari offered the perfect escape. Sometimes a cool place to sit and recharge can be just as valuable as a major attraction. Once refreshed, don’t forget to head over to Kilimanjaro Safaris for a ride through Harambe Wildlife Reserve to see some of your favorite African animals!
For dinner, we visited Yak & Yeti Restaurant, which has become one of my favorite Disney restaurants overall.
The atmosphere is incredible, the menu offers excellent variety, and the famous Fried Wontons dessert absolutely deserves its reputation. The combination of crispy wontons, strawberries, pineapple, and cream cheese sauce was unforgettable.
We also enjoyed the new Zootopia: Better Zoogether show, which added another layer of family-friendly entertainment to the park.
EPCOT: A Celebration of Discovery
If I had to choose one park that perfectly blends education, entertainment, food, and culture, it would be EPCOT.
During our visit, the Flower & Garden Festival was in full bloom, transforming the park into a living work of art. Everywhere we turned, there were colorful gardens, topiaries, and seasonal displays. One of the unexpected highlights was visiting the Butterfly Landing exhibit and discovering Thumper nestled among the stunning floral topiary displays throughout the festival.
One mistake I see many visitors make is rushing through EPCOT.
Don't.
This is a park that rewards curiosity. Plan to spend a couple of days at this park.
Some of our favorite attractions included Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, Frozen Ever After, Soarin', Spaceship Earth, Test Track, Living with the Land, The Seas with Nemo & Friends, and Journey of Water Inspired by Moana.
The Seas with Nemo & Friends is especially unique because it ends inside a real aquarium.
Journey of Water is interactive, educational, and yes—you may get a little wet! Don’t miss this one!
Living with the Land remains one of Disney's most underrated attractions because it offers a relaxing experience while showcasing real-world sustainability practices.
The World Showcase is where EPCOT truly shines.
Each country pavilion feels like a destination of its own, with unique architecture, shopping, dining, and entertainment. We loved exploring the various shops and experiencing the cultural details that make each pavilion unique.
Lunch at Sunshine Seasons offered fresh, healthy options, while dinner at Chefs de France provided a wonderful culinary experience in the France Pavilion.
As the evening approached, we took advantage of the Friendship Boats crossing World Showcase Lagoon. It was a relaxing way to enjoy the scenery before finding a spot for the nighttime spectacular.
And just like Magic Kingdom, EPCOT's fireworks provided the perfect ending to an incredible day.
Disney Springs: More Than Just Shopping
Many guests overlook Disney Springs, but I think it's one of the most enjoyable parts of a Walt Disney World vacation.
Beyond shopping, it offers incredible dining and entertainment.
Some of our favorite stops included Gideon's Bakehouse for massive cookies and cakes, Vivoli il Gelato for incredible gelato and the Original Affogato—which may have been my favorite dessert of the entire trip.
We also enjoyed exploring iconic dining locations like The Boathouse, Summer House on the Lake, and the classic Rainforest Cafe, complete with its erupting volcano.
One experience I strongly recommend is Drawn to Life by Cirque du Soleil.
The combination of Disney storytelling and breathtaking acrobatics created one of the most memorable shows we've ever seen.
Final Thoughts
What makes Walt Disney World special isn't any single attraction, restaurant, or show.
It's the combination of all the little moments.
The castle photos. The unexpected snacks. The laughter on rides. The fireworks at the end of a long day. The memories created together.

I bring expert knowledge of Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, Disneyland, and other Disney destinations to help make your vacation planning simple and stress-free.
